From my former EGM writer e-friend, Jenn Frank, I caught this most excellent video of the upcoming WiiWare title Bit.Trip Beat from Gaijin studios.
Impressive doesn’t even begin to describe this experience. On the surface, it appears to be an eclectic blend of Pong, Arkanoid, and maybe even some Space Invaders. But it has the gameplay of a Guitar Hero game if it had been created for the Atari 2600 back in 1981. The beat rhythm is fantastically trippy with a hard, resonant 8-bit sound that reminds me of some of 8-bit Peoples music. It also looks horrendously difficult, especially considering that it appears as though some of the “bits” that you need to knock with your paddle act in an inconsistent manner from the other “bits”. I’m sure there’s an obvious methodology there that I’m not seeing yet, and honestly, fuzzy YouTube videos are not a good way to judge how a game functions. I’m definitely keeping my eye on this one, though.
Joystiq managed to snag themselves a snazzy slick exclusive trailer that, while lacking a bit in as much gameplay footage, is still marvelous in its own right because it features a spaceman made of sound and bits. You can’t just find something like that everywhere, people.
